2004 Belleville Doubles Tournament Description and Results

117 players (including 13 Juniors) entered from 27 different clubs and 5 different badminton associations.
62 players were from T&D, 51 from COBA, 4 from ODBA, 3 from GBDA, and 1 from WOBA.
The clubs, in decreasing order of entries, were:
Seneca (15), Belleville (14), Varsity (13), Limestone (10), Whitby MHC (9), Lee's (8), Brighton (7), Mandarin (5), Ottawa RA (4), York (4), Peterborough (3), Phoenix (3), Barrie (2), Bethune (2), Boulevard (2), GNO (2), Mowat (2), Oakville (2), Recreational BC (2), White Oaks (2), Aurora (1), Badminton & Racquet (1), Brampton (1), G. Brown (1), Lindsay (1), Ryerson (1), Waterloo/Mandarin (1).

Doubles and Mixed play took place on Sat. Jan. 17.
Because of exceptionally large entry numbers (34% more than last year) and a midnight time constraint, the first two matches of every event was a 21 point game. The first Doubles matches were allowed to start at 9:30 a.m. , 1/2 hour ahead of schedule. The first Mixed match started at 3:30 p.m., 2 hours behind the original schedule and 1 hour behind revised projections. The last match finished around 11:40 p.m.

Changes are required in order to have all matches ‘best of 3 to 15’ in next year’s tournament. We will have to consider capping entry numbers. We’ll also require more court monitors to prevent exessive warm up time. It was often difficult to get players on court in a timely fashion even though a megaphone was used -- perhaps we’ll have to restrict spectators to one area rather than be spread out around the gym’s very large perimeter.

Approximately 12 Belleville people participated in organizing and running the tournament, which was assisted by Referee/player David Wong. The canteen was well stocked and lots of pizza was brought in to make sure all the players and workers wouldn't starve.

Black Knight was represented by the String Doctor, Glen Crowley, who had his sales and repair stations in support of the tourney. The Harbour Club supplied the polycarbonate safety glasses that were loaned to Juniors.

Door Prizes

Glen Crowley provided the tournament's door prizes at wholesale, with 9 prizes given out (2 racquets, 4 sports bags and 3 T shirts). The prizes were won by:
Adam Scriver (Brighton), Marilyn Kirkman (Belleville), Robert Yu (Seneca), Shiela O'driscoll (Oakville), Lee Mills (Belleville), Karen Yan (Lee's), Shilin Cheung (Varsity), and Maria Cheah (Mandarin), with one winner's name unrecorded.
