Doug Grant Open - A Smash!
(written by Philip Chan, member of Bay of Quinte Junior Badminton Club)

The 2002 Doug Grant Open Badminton Tournament was hosted by the Belleville Badminton Club at the 8 Wing Trenton Air Force Base with singles on Friday, October 25th and doubles on Saturday, October 26th.

The Doug Grant is an annual tournament held by the Belleville Badminton Club in memory of the player Doug Grant. The event attracted 103 players from 22 different clubs and 5 badminton district associations – Ottawa District, Central Ontario, Georgian Bay District, Toronto and District and Western Ontario District.

One of the highlights of the weekend tournament was the presentation of the Keith Hollands Memorial Trophy to COBA Past President Trudi Tilley of Uxbridge by Central Ontario Badminton Association President Wayne King on Friday Night. The Keith Hollands Award is the most prestigious award available from the Ontario Badminton Association and recognizes the individual who is the most outstanding badminton volunteer in the entire province of Ontario through dedication and effort towards the promotion of recreational badminton in the past year. For the past few years, COBA district had been without an executive, and Trudi had almost single-handedly managed the region's affairs and kept badminton activities like the Ontario Winter Games team, district championships, exchanges and other tournaments in a positive manner. An award richly deserved by a really hard-working and determined person.

Comments
The 2002 Doug Grant tournament had a strong contingent of volunteers led by acting referee David Wong (Toronto) and tournament chair Terry Mandzy. As well, Newton Reed, a player in his 70’s, was called on for a brief period as an umpire.
A 50/50 draw to sponsor the COBA Ontario Winter Games was won by COBA Marketing Director Jane Darling (Peterborough). Several door prizes such as various sports bags, racquets, and a fleece jacket were won by Boya Chance (Le Club), Eric Wilson (Le Club), Jerry Singh (Mowat), Stephanie Morgan (Limestone), and Lisa Risebrough (Uxbridge).

The 2002 Doug Grant Open was a tremendous success.

A large number of entries ensured that plenty of high quality badminton was played. As well, the tournament couldn’t have happened without the effort put in by tournament organizers and draw desk volunteers. Being one of the first tournaments in the season, everyone is now looking forward to the coming season and perhaps next year’s Doug Grant for more badminton action.
