Details of the 2001/2002 Belleville Doubles Tournament:

Participation was exceptionally large, with 80 competitors representing 25 different Ontario badminton clubs. Play ran on Sat. Jan. 26th from 9:00 am through to 9:00 pm with none of the 6 courts empty for prolongued periods thanks to the cooperation of the players and the skill of Marylin and Pat, the ladies who scheduled the games.

Represented were the Ajax, Aurora, Barrie, Belleville, Borden, Burlington, Erindale Jr. (Mississauga), George Brown (Richmond Hill), Harwood (Ajax), Le Club (Kingston), Limestone (Kingston), Mowat (Toronto), Oakville, Ottawa R.A. Center, Peterborough, Queen's (Kingston), Toronto Granite, Toronto Badminton & Racquet, Trenton, Whitby, Whitby YMCA, Whitby Mental Health, Woburn, University of Toronto, and Uxbridge Badminton Clubs.

The tournament had finals at A, B, C, & D skill levels, and was open to players of all ages. Junior participants made a strong showing against the seniors, with unseeded 16 year-olds Anca Gaspar and Shauna Wong winning the Ladies A Doubles. As well, the 16/17 year-old pair of Shauna Wong/Nathaniel Allard took the first seed Mixed A Doubles winners to three games, the only pair to do so.

There were many games of exciting badminton. Before giving the results of the finals here are some some miscellaneous items:
-- Black Knight suppled two free yellow feather birds for testing in first round matches. Some found the birds to be brittle and sluggish, characteristics probably due to inadequate steaming.
-- COBA held a 50/50 draw which I’m told was won by Sara Kane, a spectator.
-- All competitors’ names were entered in a draw for two sport bags supplied courtesy of the Belleville Club and subsidized by The String Doctor -- Paul Bennington and Mike Van were the winners.
